What makes this part of Westminster different
Standley Lake sits in the western part of Westminster, on the Jefferson County side of the city, surrounded by a regional park and open space. The neighborhoods around it were mostly built from the 1970s through the 1990s, with ranches, split-levels and two-story homes, many with wood fences and decks facing the open land.
Grass and brush along open-space edges can dry out quickly in Front Range wind, especially in late fall, winter and early spring. A grass fire does not need to reach a house to damage it. Radiant heat can warp vinyl siding and window frames, embers can enter attic and soffit vents, and smoke can fill a house through open windows or the furnace intake.
Typical exterior damage from a nearby grass fire
| Area of the house | Possible damage | Repair consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Fences and decks | Burned or charred wood, melted composite | Deck rebuilds usually need a permit; check ledger connections |
| Vinyl siding | Warping, melting, discoloration from radiant heat | Matching faded siding often means replacing a full wall |
| Windows | Warped vinyl frames, cracked glass, failed seals | Order early; custom sizes take time |
| Soffit and attic vents | Ember entry, smoke inside the attic | Inspect attic insulation for smoke and char |
| Roof | Ember damage to shingles, gutters full of burned debris | Have the roof inspected even if no fire was visible |
| Landscaping and irrigation | Melted drip lines and sprinkler heads | Often covered differently than the dwelling; check your policy |
After a nearby grass fire
Follow official instructions
If an evacuation was ordered, wait for officials to allow return. Call 911 for any active fire or smoke.
Walk the exterior
Photograph every side of the house, the fence, deck and roof edge before cleanup.
Check the attic
Have someone look at insulation and vents for ember damage and smoke staining.
Change the furnace filter
Smoke drawn in by the furnace leaves residue in the filter and ducts.
Report to your insurer
Even exterior-only heat damage can add up across siding, windows and a fence.

Common questions
Nothing burned, but the house smells of smoke after a nearby grass fire. Is that a claim?
It can be. Many policies cover smoke damage, depending on wording and severity. Note the date, photograph any residue on window sills and surfaces, and ask your insurer before cleaning heavily.
